electrical work

Electrical work by yourself or by a professional?

There are many different types of electrical work in the home, some of which require more professional skills than others. Some of the electrical work can be done by yourself if you have the skills, but if you feel the slightest uncertainty, it's worth getting professional help. In addition, much electrical work requires professional skills, equipment and comprehensive insurance. These jobs should never be done by yourself, but by a trained electrician.

It also depends on the type of housing you live in, which jobs you should do yourself. If you live in a rented property, you should contact your landlord or letting agent for almost all electrical installations and repairs, except for the smallest electrical work. If you live in your own apartment or detached house, you have more freedom to do the work yourself, but it is often a good idea to use an electrician. In new builds, electrical work is carried out in accordance with an electrical plan drawn up by a professional. The tenant is usually involved in drawing up the plan, working with the electrical contractor. Holiday homes are often further away and sometimes less accessible, but even there it is worth relying on the skills of a professional electrician.

DIY

Of course, you can do some of the electrical work yourself if you wish. In particular, there are plenty of preparatory jobs where doing them yourself can reduce the amount of work left for the electrician. Small jobs that everyone can do themselves include changing a fuse and a light bulb and fixing a light fitting to a piece of sugar. It is also allowed to replace the plug with a newer plug. Even when doing these jobs, you should be sure that you know how to do them correctly and always check the instructions beforehand. You can also install an aerial yourself in a detached house or in your own home, but make sure you know what you are doing.

Use a professional

All other electrical work, except minor work, should be left to professionals. For example, the installation of sockets and power connections, such as a cooker or stove, should be carried out by an electrician. All electricians are trained in their trade and are licensed to carry out electrical repairs and installations. By using a professional, you will avoid various wiring errors, so your appliances will be safe to use. You'll also avoid the damage that could happen if you install it yourself. In addition to professional skills, an electrician will have access to the appropriate safety equipment and insurance.

Play it safe

If you carry out minor electrical work yourself, always remember to take care of safety at work. Turn off the main switch or remove the fuse before starting work. Make sure the room is lit so you can see what you are doing. If you need a ladder to carry out the work, make sure it is properly supported. Also let others in your home know what you are doing.

By using a professional, you can be sure that your home and electrical appliances are safe to use. Your home insurance may also not cover damage caused by electrical equipment installed incorrectly and without a professional. Saving money is also not a reason to do your own installations, as incorrectly installed electrical equipment can be much more expensive than using a professional. Work done by an electrician is also covered by a warranty and can qualify for a household tax credit, which significantly reduces the cost of the work.
