An electrician - or do it yourself?

When to call an electrician.

From time to time, a situation arises where a socket or light switch breaks or a new location for a light fitting is needed. What can you do yourself and when should you call in a professional electrician?

While minor electrical repairs or parts replacements may sound easy, the job should almost always be done by a professional. Improperly done electrical installation can be life-threatening.

Today, you can only do a few electrical things yourself at home, such as changing fuses and replacing a light bulb, lighter and sugar cube. You can also repair a single-phase supply or extension lead by changing the plug. But only if you are sure you can do it correctly and safely.

The following electrical work may be carried out with due care and attention:

  1. Removal and fixing of covers of installation boxes with a rated voltage of up to 250 volts, installation, repair and maintenance of single-phase plugs, connecting wires, extension cords and interior lighting fittings, and similar work.
  2. Electrical work on installations with a rated voltage not exceeding 50 V a.c. or 120 V d.c.
  3. Work on electrical equipment where the live parts are protected against accidental contact.
  4. Repairing electrical equipment built for your own use, if this is related to a hobby activity in the field of electricity.

For other work, a professional, trained electrician must be called in. The electrician will insert the necessary sockets and repair broken fixed fittings.

An ordinary electricity user is not allowed to carry out fixed electrical installations, such as the installation of fixed lighting fixtures or mirror cabinets with a light fixture and/or socket.

In all electrical work, the most important thing is the electrical and fire safety of the installations. Electricity is dangerous in unskilled hands. Therefore, by law, electrical installations may only be carried out by qualified and authorised professionals. They can also guarantee the work done.

If you have any questions about electrical installations or need an electrician to come quickly. Contact 24 Center's electrical on-call service by calling 0100 2470, or by submitting a quote request.
