electric car use and charging stations will become more widespread

Electric cars and charging stations are becoming more common

Electric cars are growing rapidly, and so are charging stations for electric and hybrid cars.

The Finnish Safety and Chemicals Agency (TUKES) has expressed concern about the risks associated with charging electric cars and rechargeable hybrid cars. A socket under constant stress can pose a fire risk, so it is always a good idea to check that the socket is suitable for charging a car.

"Standard grounded socket outlets (16 A) are not designed to withstand continuous and repeated high loads, such as overnight charging of an electric car. In particular, sockets in poor condition can become dangerously hot during such use. Over time, overheating can cause the socket to blacken and the connectors to wear out. In the worst case, the socket may catch fire. A heavy charger hanging freely on a cord can also cause torsion in the socket and wear out the connector." Says Seppo Niemi, Chief Inspector at TUKES

TUKES recommends that you install your own charging stations in your home to ensure safe and efficient charging. The growing popularity of electric cars has also diversified the range of charging stations available, while their prices have fallen.

Whether you buy a charging station for a housing association or a detached house, the process is pretty much the same. The first step is an initial survey to see what the property's capacity is to install charging points. Many electrical contractors offer this survey free of charge. At the same time, they can recommend which type of system is best suited to the installation. After the survey, a charging station can be ordered. A home charging point should always be connected directly to the main electricity supply, which is a licensed activity and should therefore be carried out by a professional electrician. It is also a good idea to inform the building insurance company of the installation of the charging point.
