the price of a hot water heater

Hot water heater price

In Finland, domestic hot water is heated in electrically heated detached and terraced houses with a hot water heater. The purpose of the water heater is to heat water and ensure that there is enough hot water available for consumption. A hot water tank is a well-insulated tank made of corrosion-resistant material with an electrical resistance. The hot water tank is supplied with cold water, which is heated to around +65 °C by means of an electric resistor and distributed along the service water pipework to the water fittings at the various points of use.

Choosing a hot water heater

The most important criteria for choosing a hot water heater are the right size and high-quality materials. When determining the size of a hot water heater, it is important to consider the number of users and the amount of hot water required. It is important to remember that there should be enough hot water even during a momentary peak in consumption, so it is better to have a little too big than too small a tank. Another important consideration is the location of the boiler. Smaller heaters are often installed in cupboards in summer cottages, while in homes they are installed in modular form on the edge of cupboards, or horizontally under the ceiling of the sauna, for example.

Placement of the hot water heater

It is advisable to install the hot water heater in a warm or even semi-warm room to minimise heat loss. In addition, the water heater should be installed in a room with a floor well, because the expansion water from the water heater's safety valve must be led to the well and also, in the event of the water heater breaking, it is better for the water in the tank to drain into the floor well than onto the parquet floor, so as not to cause water damage. The water in the hot water tank heats up to about 2% of the tank volume. This is why it is important to have a safety valve. If the expansion water cannot escape through the standpipe, there is a risk that the tank will explode in the worst case. Expansion water from the safety valve should be discharged into a floor drain, leaving the end of the waste pipe visible, to ensure that the valve operates. The relief valve must never be plugged or introduced into the well water, causing the water to back up. The pipe exiting the relief valve should not exceed 2 m and the pipe should be at a downward angle. Although the water heater does not require much maintenance, the safety valve should be tested annually (by turning the knob of the safety valve counter-clockwise), and the resistors and thermostat of the water heater may require maintenance, so the installation location should be sized for easy maintenance.

Service life of the hot water heater

The lifetime of a hot water heater is affected by its use, maintenance and water quality. The technical lifetime of hot water storage tanks is about 15 to 20 years. In the experience of hot water tank manufacturers, the lifetime can be shorter if water conditions are challenging. In most cases, the failure of a hot water heater is only noticed when there is not enough hot water or when it is too lukewarm. The most common failures are a broken domestic hot water pre-mixer, a safety valve, an electrical resistance or a plastic inner pipe. It's a good idea to replace your hot water heater in good time, because then you'll always have hot water when you need it, and you won't run out in the middle of a shower. The risk of water damage is also substantially reduced, which can also lower the home insurance premium when renovating a domestic hot water heater. A new water heater is always more energy-efficient than an old one, because it has lower heat losses due to better insulation. If your water heater is old, it's worth replacing it before it breaks down to avoid potential water damage. If your water heater is only a few years old, have it repaired by a professional.

Hot water heater price

The price of a hot water heater is determined by the size, efficiency and volume of the heater, and the installation price is influenced by the installation methods between the different models, for example whether it is a floor or wall mounted heater. The method of installation also matters, for example, whether it is replacing an old boiler, in which case the connections may at best be fully completed. The average price of a hot water heater varies between €300 and €2500 per heater. Including installation and commissioning, i.e. once installed, prices range from around €1,000 to €3,000. The cost of installing, connecting, replacing or replacing a DHW heater alone averages around €500 - €2000. Maintenance work on a hot water heater is usually carried out on an hourly basis.
