Regular maintenance will extend the life of your air source heat pump - here's how to clean it yourself

An air-source heat pump will last 12-15 years if well maintained. But what is well-maintained in practice? In this blog post, we explain how often you should maintain your air source heat pump. We also tell you what you can do yourself and when to call in a professional.

When is it time to clean your air source heat pump?

The recommended self-cleaning interval for an air-source heat pump is 1-2 months. You can even mark this on your calendar to check how your air heat pump filters are looking at least every couple of months. Of course, it should be noted that the location of the unit will affect how often it should be cleaned. If the heat pump is installed in the kitchen, the filters will collect grease from cooking and should be cleaned weekly. Cleaning intervals are influenced not only by how often the heat pump is used, but also by whether there are pets in the household, whether tobacco is smoked indoors or how often the fireplace is heated.

Remember, if you're not quite sure what to do, you can call 24 Center Customer Service. You'll get help from experienced building services experts, and if necessary we'll send a professional from our network to help you.

Things to consider before you start cleaning

As with many building maintenance tasks, proactive work is valid when it comes to maintaining your air source heat pump, but you should also use your own senses. If you smell strange odours in your home or hear suspicious noises, it's also worth checking the condition and cleanliness of your air-source heat pump. An uncleaned air-source heat pump is a very fertile ground for the growth of mould and harmful bacteria. A dirty air source heat pump is not very energy efficient and will not provide the best heating or cooling for your home.

Note! Before cleaning your air-source heat pump, check the manual for the manufacturer's recommendations and prohibitions. If you act against these, the appliance may not only break down, it may also void its warranty as a result of misuse.

Remember your own safety too!
Switch off the appliance and remove the plug from the wall or switch off the fuse box before cleaning. The air-source heat pump is typically mounted on the ceiling, so ensure your safety by using a sturdy ladder when working at heights. Also protect your hands to prevent scratches and irritation from cleaning products.

Cleaning the indoor unit

  • You can vacuum the visible parts of the filters or use a cleaning cloth and lightly wash the parts yourself. If the filters are not very dirty, a rinse under running water may be sufficient. You can use household all-purpose cleaners, but no other strong detergents are recommended.
  • Allow the parts to dry completely before reinstalling the filters and putting the appliance back into service.

NOTE! Do not touch the lamellae visible under the filters. Improper cleaning techniques can break them. If they look very dirty or smell bad, you should call a professional to do a deep cleaning.

Cleaning the outdoor unit

  • Check regularly that no debris, such as leaves or twigs, has entered the outdoor unit. This can damage the propeller of the unit. Especially after stormy weather or high winds, it is a good idea to check the external unit.
  • It is also a good idea to clean the grille regularly, especially if the appliance is located in a very dusty or dirty place.

You should have a professional deep clean every three to five years or so, depending on the level of use and the location of the unit. During a deep cleaning, a professional will check the functionality of the parts of the appliance, service them if necessary and carry out a thorough cleaning.

Condes water

If your air-source heat pump has a condensate pipe, make sure it is free of blockages and the water flows properly. Bubbling or misdirected condensation can cause moisture damage to the home's structures and problems with indoor air quality.

Purchasing an air-source heat pump in mind

Have you considered getting an air-source heat pump? An air source heat pump increases comfort and promotes respiratory health, as well as improving sleep quality by allowing the bedroom temperature to be adjusted to the optimum. In addition, the air source heat pump is an important tool for building services, such as protecting the structure of the home from damp.
